Yasmin birth control pills sales up despite "the pill" casualty
Not
significant affect on sales of Yasmin contraception reported in Croatia despite
the death of young girl reported.
(September 26, 2008), In the last
month, a young girl was died in Australia due to blood clot in the lungs after
consuming Yasmin birth control pills
for few months. It was tossed up in media and many questions were raised for safety
of women using most popular contraceptive brand, Yasmin. After the incident, it
was expected that Yasmin sales would drastically suffer and women would switch
over to other brand, however, despite the medical casualty, September sales of
Yasmin was not significantly suffered.
There were two more cases of casualties
were reported due to consumption of Yasmin birth control. Helena Rukavina, the
student, lost her life in Zadar due to lung embolism while she was on Yasmin pill.
Another girl, Rijeka died due to pneumonia while she was on Yasmin pills for three
months.
Sale of Yasmin pills were 50% down in half of Zageb's pharmacies,
however, remaining half pharmacies of the city were not significantly affected
but in some cases increased sale is reported. Abranas Pharmacy is reported to
have steady sale of Yasmin and claimed to have sold 50 boxes in this month as
well. Similarly, Pablo Pharmacy claims increased sale of 10 boxes i.e from 40
boxes in August to 50 boxes in September.
On the other hand, few pharmacies
have reported sudden decline in the sale of Yasmin pills and other birth control
pills in line. Not only this, some other birth control options like diaphragms
have also reported to be having negative sales figures.
The data collected
from the study of various pharmacies shows that not all women reacted to the news
of young girls' deaths in the similar fashion but they found to be cautious with
Yasmin birth control pills. They are taking more advice from doctors and taking
extra precautions.
Pharmacists of Zagreb, however, do not found to be agreed
with Yasmin as the "killer pill". According to them, Yasmin is the most popular
brand and can be effective in protecting unwanted pregnancies, if taken as prescribed.
Even if it is prescribed, patients are highly recommended to have clinical check-up
every three months. In case of sever side-effects, one should immediately seek
their healthcare professional or doctor's help and must reveal to them that they
are on pills.
