NuvaRing Birth Control May Reduce Bleeding & Pelvic Pain
It
will be good news for women who have been using NuvaRing
birth control rings that new research has found that continuous use of NuvaRing
could reduce the painful bleeding and help in reducing pelvic pain significantly.
NuvaRing is combined oral birth control vaginal ring being used for 30
days. It was approved by FDA in October 2001. Since then it has been popular among
women who are willing to be on birth control source but prefer to have alternative
to birth control pills. NuvaRing comprises of two hormones, estrogen and ethinyl
estradiol, which prevent ovulation (i.e release of egg) to meet with sperm. Thus,
it stops fertilization of eggs which do not result in any pregnancy. NuvaRing
birth control vaginal ring was found to be 99% effective in preventing unwanted
pregnancies.
Earlier reports raised the concern about the safety of use
of NuvaRing as some serious
side effects like blood clotting was reported in some cases. The birth control
vaginal ring was found to be main cause of serious health injuries like heart
strokes, heart attacks and deep vein thrombosis in few cases. It was earlier advised
to women not to use NuvaRing birth control ring for long if these side effects
occur frequently while it is in use.
However, the article issued in the
popular health magazines Obstetrics & Gynecology, it was revealed that continuous
use of NuvaRing birth control ring do not affect seriously, in fact, its continuous
use could help in reducing break-through bleeding and plavic pain. This was mentioned
after having a controlled trial on few women who have been using NuvaRing. Test
was carried on two groups. One group was replacing the birth control vaginal ring
after 30 days (as it should be because NuvaRing is for monthly use) with new ring
irrespective of expecting menstrual periods and thus, having no-ring free days.
Another group was advised to stop using NuvaRing if they experienced break-through
bleeding 5 or more days but they could restart using it after 4 days.
The
trials showed the results that group of women who were using NuvaRing birth control
vaginal ring continuously, experienced the less amount of reduction in flow and
pelvic pain. On the other hand, another group of women who re-started the use
of NuvaRing after the gap of 4-5 days (due to higher amount of release of break-through
bleeding) now coming to normalcy. However, no blood clots or serious health injuries
were reported in both the trials.
Some number of lawsuits filed by women
who experienced blood clotting and serious health injuries due to the use of NuvaRing
birth control vaginal ring, however, still claim that the serious health risks
like heart strokes and heart attacks are not properly disclosed and therefore,
they are not well-informed about the serious side-effects of the NuvaRing or sometimes
could not make right choice on NuvaRing due to its benefits which overshadow its
high risks.
All federal lawsuits pertaining to NuvaRing
were collected by Judicial Panel o Multidistrict Litigation in the Eastern District
of Missouri, before Judge Rodney W. Sippel on August 22, 2008. Preliminary issues
regarding the establishment of a Case Management Order will be addressed by the
Court, which is scheduled to be on October 2, 2008
