New York teens' sexuality revealing eye-opening reports
Get
to know about New York city teens sexuality and their pregnancy rate which could
be eye opener.
The recent survey released on Wednesday, August 29, 2007,
by city's health department found that only 8 per cent of sexually active youths
have reported to be on birth control pills either by their partner or themselves,
compared to 18 percent nationwide. These New York teenagers are, in fact, as sexually
active as others, however, very less per cent of them taking pregnancy matters
seriously and using birth control pills, patches or any other birth control products.
Similarly about 1 in 5 sexually active girls is not using birth control
products or methods at all, which is lower than compared to 1 in 7 nationwide.
In 2005, the teen pregnancy rate - including live births, abortions and miscarriages
- in New York City was 94 per 1,000 girls ages 15 to 19. The national rate was
lower, 76 per 1,000 people.
Among other things, it found that about half
of New York teens were sexually active and about 69 percent of those youths used
condoms. Both of those numbers are close to the national average.
The report
was based on year 2005 survey taken for teens between the grades of 9 and 12 showed
that New York 's sexually teens are less likely to be on the pill than other sexually
active teens of the same grades entire country.
The report at: www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/survey/survey-2007youthsex.pdf
also found 19 percent of sexually active girls used no birth control the last
time they had sex, compared to 14 percent nationwide. Only 4 percent of sexually
active teens use dual protection -- condoms and another method -- compared to
8 percent nationwide.
More shockingly, sexually active teens of city's
poor, predominantly Hispanic South Bronx neighborhood found to be nearly twice
less likely to be on birth control pills than other parts of the city. Black teenage
girls in New York , on the other hand, were no more or less likely to have used
birth control during their last sexual encounters than the average U.S. teenage
girl.
The survey is conducted every other year by city health and education
officials and is done in conjunction with a similar survey administered by the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
