We Must
Thank Lybrel & FDA for No Periods
Women who were dreaming about no periods
can now say their dreams came true.
Monthly menstrual cycle has always
been in the love-hate relationship with women. Millions of women suffer from headache,
severe cramps, mood swings, heavy bleeding and acne problems due to monthly menstruation.
It will be great news for those women who always wish to be free from periods
because Lybrel birth control pill is now available in the market, which is the
only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved "continuous" pill for 365 days
a year. Even celebrities like Britney Spears had once quoted that if Lybrel had
been available three years ago, her life would have been different than what is
now!
Approximately 2.5 million women suffer from menstrual disorder every
month in U.S. and nearly 18 million women are relying on birth control pills for
one reason or another.
The popular "American Journal of Obstetrics and
Gynecology" has once reported a study in the June 2001 public issue saying that
91 percent of women who are suffering from severe menstrual disorders and if given
the chance, would certainly prefer to extend their menstrual cycle or might even
prefer to eliminate it completely, though this choice was not available in the
year 2002. Study has further reported that 94 percent of women who were taking
birth control pills had found that the lifestyle is greatly improved. Some of
the other extended regimen pills are Seasonale and Seasonique which helps women
to get maximum four periods in a year.
Lybrel
pill is manufactured by Wyeth, is the first of its kind, which completely eliminates
periods for 365 days a year besides being 99% effective contraception pill. It
contains 90 microgram levonorgestrel/20 microgram ethinyl estradiol tablets and
is classified as a low dose, continuous, non-cyclic combination oral contraceptive.
Since the beginning of birth control pills in 1960s, its doses used to be in 21
or 28 days cycle regime where last 7 days are off and only supported by placebos
and women experience break-through similarly like periods but actually it is withdrawal
break-through due to pills.
Lybrel gives freedom to women from their hectic
monthly menstruation cycles. It got approval only after FDA's Reproductive Health
Drugs advisory committee had undertaken in-depth analysis of the pill. It was
approved by FDA on May 22, 2007 and it is available in the market since July 2007
to women 18 years old and above on prescription. It works by stopping ovulation
i.e release of eggs so that sperm can not meet and fertilize the eggs. It supplies
the low doses of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol slowly to the body every
day without the pill-free or placebo intervals. It will prevent periods as long
as the doses are taken daily. Lybrel is also reversible and 99% of women would
experience menstruation within 90 days of discontinuation of the pill.
