Risk and Side Effects
of Emergency Contraceptive Pills or Morning After Pill:
Emergency contraception
pills may have side effects like other birth control pills. The most common side
effects noticed during the consumption of emergency contraception pill are vomiting
and nausea.
Woman should not stop taking emergency contraceptive pill after
getting nausea because pregnancy may not be avoided unless second pill of the
dose is taken.
However, these side effects are minimized or go away completely
within couple of days. If you vomit within one hour of taking ECP, please consult
your doctor or healthcare professional. You may still need to take next dose.
Emergency
contraceptive pill may affect menstrual cycle. A woman may experience heavier
or lighter periods, spotting before next period; it may be delayed or come sooner
than normal schedule.
Other side effects of emergency birth control pills
can be headache, bloating, dizziness, abdominal pain, breast tenderness and fatigue.
Emergency
contraceptive pills may be the cause of concern if you had diagnosed with any
of the following diseases or conditions:
Breast cancer, liver or uterine
cancer personally or have family medical history
Thyroid
Heart stroke
or had the history of stroke in the past or family medical history
High blood
pressure
Liver or kidney failure
Blood clotting
Endometriosis
Migraine headaches
Gallbladder disease or gallstones
Fibroid tumors of
the uterus
Hepatitis
Depression
Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Epilepsy
Lupus
Sickle cell anemia
Smoking is strictly not recommended while
taking ECPs. Since ECP are also available in combined estrogen and progestin hormones,
estrogen may cause serious health hazard or heart stroke or even death for regular
smokers. Women who are smoking and specially above 35 years should discuss this
matter with their doctor or healthcare professional. Breast-feeding mothers should
also seek doctor's advice. They are usually advised for progestin-only emergency
contraceptive pill.
