than 72 hours have passed and no emergency birth control pills have been taken,
there is still option available to stop unwanted pregnancy i.e intrauterine-device

inserted through cervix and placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. A small
string hangs down from IUD into the upper part of the vagina. However, this is
not noticeable during intercourse. This placement can be done during an office
visit. Once in place, the IUD stays in your uterus until your doctor removes it.
Doctor can also remove IUD after the next menstrual period, if it is only required
for short term. It can be removed easily and procedure is quicker than insertion.
IUD can be inserted for upto 10 years and most effective - upto 99.9% in
preventing pregnancy, in the case of copper-based IUD device. It stops fertilized
egg from developing or implanting on its own inside uterus walls thus no pregnancy
occurs. However, its success is still greatly affected by its timing. Sooner it
is taken as emergency contraception, the greater chances of preventing pregnancy.
